Gold prices exhibited a subdued performance on Tuesday, as market participants directed their attention toward the impending US inflation data for new insights regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path. Spot gold experienced a decline of 0.2%, trading at $4,161.81 per ounce as of 0015, following a peak not seen in a week during the prior session. US gold futures for December delivery experienced a decline of 0.1%, settling at $4,186.60. The US dollar remained close to an 18-month peak, resulting in increased costs for dollar-denominated metals for holders of alternative currencies.

Markets are anticipating the release of the Consumer Price Index on Wednesday, followed by the Producer Price Index report set to be published on Thursday. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack stated that the US central bank ought to transition “relatively quickly” to a restrictive monetary policy stance to manage inflation, which she perceives as increasingly broad-based and beginning to affect firms’ price-setting strategies. The Fed is widely expected to maintain its current interest rates this month; however, markets are pricing in an 88% probability of a rate increase in December, as indicated by CME’s FedWatch tool.

When interest rates are elevated, investors typically gravitate toward yield-bearing assets rather than gold. On the geopolitical front, Saudi Arabia reported a new wave of incoming fire, indicating that Riyadh airport would remain closed for the time being. This announcement follows a deadly missile strike on a departure terminal that occurred on Saturday, an attack claimed by Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthis. Among other metals, spot silver eased 0.4% to $60.09, platinum was down 0.3% to $1,680.95, and palladium fell 0.7% to $1,135.70.
