Gold prices experienced a decline on Friday, positioning themselves for a weekly downturn, influenced by a robust dollar and increasing anticipation that the US Federal Reserve will maintain elevated interest rates for an extended period to address inflationary pressures. Spot gold was down 0.2% at $4,270.40 per ounce, as of 0035, and has lost more than 2% so far this week. US gold futures increased by 0.2%, reaching a value of $4,304.80. The dollar is poised for a weekly gain, resulting in an increase in the cost of greenback-priced metals for holders of alternative currencies.

The U.S. central bank is expected to implement another rate increase to address persistently elevated inflation, according to two Federal Reserve officials. This follows a week after the Federal Reserve increased its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point. “Returning inflation to 2% is a top priority, and I will support the policy path that gets us there while carefully weighing risks to the labor market along the way,” Philadelphia Fed President Anna Paulson told a conference at her regional bank.

Meanwhile, speaking in London, New York Fed President John Williams also suggested tighter monetary policy is coming. Gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation; however, elevated interest rates can diminish its demand by enhancing the attractiveness of yield-bearing assets. Data indicated that new claims for US unemployment benefits remained close to 57-year lows last week, implying that the labour market has regained momentum following a challenging summer and is currently managing the adverse effects stemming from the Middle East conflict.

Negotiators from the US and Iran in New York are examining a gradual approach to resolving the conflict, which would entail Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz while Washington considers lifting its economic blockade on Iran, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Spot silver declined by 0.5% to $63.58, while platinum remained stable at $1,749.61. In contrast, palladium experienced a decrease of 1.3%, settling at $1,257.70.
