Oil prices experienced an uptick in early trading on Monday following the U.S. interception of a Venezuelan oil tanker over the weekend. Brent crude futures increased by 44 cents, representing a 0.73% rise, reaching $60.91 per barrel by 0141. Meanwhile, U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude saw an uptick of 40 cents, or 0.71%, settling at $56.92. The U.S. Coast Guard is currently engaged in the pursuit of an oil tanker in international waters adjacent to Venezuela. This operation marks the second of its kind over the weekend and, if successful, would represent the third such endeavor in under two weeks, according to officials who spoke to Reuters on Sunday.
The recent uptick in oil prices can be attributed to a series of geopolitical events, beginning with U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of a “total and complete” blockade on sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers. This was further compounded by reports of a Ukrainian drone strike targeting a Russian shadow fleet vessel in the Mediterranean Sea, according to analyst Tony Sycamore. “The market is losing hope that the U.S.-brokered Russia-Ukraine peace talks will reach a lasting agreement any time soon,” stated Sycamore.
“These developments are contributing to alleviating persistent oversupply concerns, and coupled with the misleading downturn observed last week that has left the market unprepared, the balance of risks is nearing a shift back toward the upside in crude oil.” Brent and WTI experienced a decline of approximately 1% last week, following a notable drop of around 4% during the week of December 8. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff stated on Sunday that discussions among U.S., European, and Ukrainian officials over the preceding three days in Florida, aimed at concluding Russia’s war in Ukraine, concentrated on harmonizing their positions.
The meetings and individual discussions with Russian negotiators were deemed productive, he stated. Nonetheless, the chief foreign policy advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Sunday that the modifications introduced by the Europeans and Ukraine to U.S. proposals aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine did not enhance the likelihood of achieving peace.
