Gold rises as US tariff negotiations intensify.

Gold experienced a decline on Wednesday as investors positioned themselves ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy decision next week, seeking new insights into the future direction of US interest rates. Spot gold decreased by 0.1% to $4,118.64 per ounce at 0018, while US gold futures for December delivery fell by 0.1% to $4,137.60. The Fed will forgo raising interest rates this month and is expected to implement a hike in December, as indicated by nearly all economists surveyed by Reuters. This decision reflects policymakers’ inclination toward patience, despite persistent inflation suggesting the need for a more stringent approach.

Attention is now directed toward the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting scheduled for October 27-28, alongside the upcoming release of Personal Consumption Expenditures data. This metric is a crucial indicator monitored by the central bank in its pursuit of a 2% inflation target. Traders are currently assigning an 84% probability to the central bank maintaining its current interest rates in the upcoming week, while the likelihood of an increase in December stands at 90%. Higher interest rates generally exert downward pressure on gold prices due to the increased opportunity cost associated with holding bullion, which yields no interest.

The Bank of Japan is set to increase rates in December to 1.50%, following increases in June and September, as indicated by a majority of economists in a poll. This move reflects a more accelerated pace in a campaign that initially began with only one rate rise per year. Bank of England policymaker Megan Greene indicated that the risks associated with a potential increase in broader inflation, stemming from the energy price shock linked to the Iran war, were more significant than the Bank of England had anticipated. She reiterated her perspective that interest rates ought to increase.

In a recent meeting in Tehran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian engaged in discussions regarding mediation efforts and regional developments with Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, as reported by Iran’s Nournews on Tuesday. Among other metals, spot silver steadied at $57.95 per ounce, platinum rose 0.5% to $1,656.10, and palladium was little changed at $1,102.13.
