Gold prices exhibited a subdued performance in early Asian trading on Friday, as markets prepared for the highly anticipated remarks from U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium. Spot gold was down 0.2% at $4,589.85 per ounce, as of 0041. U.S. gold futures experienced a decline of 0.5%, settling at $4,642.60. Fed officials expressed their persistent concerns regarding the U.S. inflation landscape during their gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for the Kansas City Fed’s highly scrutinised annual economic symposium.
The officials addressed the matter following the release of a report indicating that the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, which serves as the primary inflation measure for the central bank, registered at 3.7% for the year ending in July. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh is scheduled to address the event later today. Data indicated that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits for the first time decreased for a second consecutive week, while the total number of individuals on jobless relief rolls declined to the lowest level in a month.
This trend suggests a stable labour market, which may provide the Federal Reserve with the flexibility to concentrate on managing inflation. Market participants are currently assessing a 35.4% probability of an interest rate increase in the United States in September, with expectations rising to a 74.6% likelihood by December, as indicated by the CME FedWatch Tool. Despite its function as a safeguard against inflation, gold often diminishes in attractiveness during periods of elevated interest rates, as it does not provide any yield.
Qatar’s prime minister made a visit to Tehran on Thursday, aiming to rejuvenate stalled diplomatic efforts six months into the ongoing conflict, while U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that Washington was not engaged in discussions with Iran at this time.
